About us / Ethos

The private concessions that Wilderness manages offer some of Africa's most impressive and untouched wildlife experiences. We are privileged to operate on 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) of southern Africa's best wildlife and wilderness reserves. The idea of space to breathe - the wilderness experience - becomes clear when we consider that Wilderness provides almost 4 000 hectares (9 800 acres) of private land per bed - or 7 500 hectares (18 500 acres) per room. This privacy and space is what makes our operation unique and special.

We put the natural environment in which we work above everything else. We therefore employ full-time environmentalists whose job it is to ensure that our camps are as eco-friendly as possible. Solar heating and power, limited burning of fossil fuels and utilising battery-operated lighting systems are just some of the features we employ.

We also believe that it is our responsibility to employ from, train and help uplift the communities in the areas where we are represented. We want to ensure the prospering of these rich cultures, the wildlife that surrounds them and the wild places they occupy. We strive to help these communities understand the value of their environmental and cultural heritage and become the wildlife custodians of the future.

On safari in Africa our guests want a camp with an unspoilt atmosphere, yet with some home comforts. Our camps are designed to achieve this delicate balance, combining ease with the ambience of our natural surroundings. In bed at night, we want you to feel the pulse of Africa, hear the roar of the lion or the sound of a barking gecko.

Meals comprise wholesome, home-style cooking at elegantly set dining tables (under the stars, under thatch or canvas, or even in outdoor bomas) where guests can relax and discuss the day's events with fellow travellers, guides and hosts.

We try to be as all-inclusive as possible on our safaris, with the core activities such as game drives, nature walks, boating and all meals included in the price. For game drives, we use customised, 4x4 vehicles that are spacious and comfortable.

Our scheduled departure safaris attract guests from all walks of life who share a passion for the wilderness. Part of the fun and the experience is the way the group interacts - there is nothing like being out in the wilderness to bring out the best in people. Meeting as strangers, we part as friends.

To create a journey, we host, entertain and educate our guests, both on safaris and at our camps, striving to give them holistic experiences that will produce new (or reaffirmed) conservationists, and create guests for life. At the end of this journey, we hope that they will be new ambassadors for Wilderness Safaris and the continent, taking Africa's messages of hope and conservation around the globe.
