Lion and Hyaena Games

Private guide Garth Thompson hosted a safari at Little Makalolo in December and captured a thrilling interaction between the Stompy Tail Pride and a local clan of hyaena:

"Madison Pan in the Linkwasha Vlei is home to a large hyaena clan, where up to 19 have been sighted at once. Hyaena are almost guaranteed to be seen each morning and evening at this Pan. The Stompy Tail Pride had been here for some days on a buffalo they had killed. We went to see what was left early one morning just before Christmas, to find no carcass any longer, the pride resting next to the pan and the hyaena and a lioness playing lion/hyaena games.

As can be seen the hyaena were not very perturbed and kept coming back to torment the lions with their presence and then be chased off by the lioness on hyaena duty. This happened multiple times over 30 minutes. An excellent way to start the day!"
