Nyika National Park harbours important populations of roan, eland, Crawshay's zebra, southern reedbuck, spotted hyaena and side-striped jackal. Elephant are occasionally spotted, with leopard often seen in the daytime. About 400 bird species occur in Nyika.

Lake Malawi has a wide range of underwater habitats, resulting in abundant wealth and diversity of mostly endemic aquatic life. Lake Malawi supports over 2 000 species of freshwater fish – a greater variety than any other lake on Earth. The majority of these are colourful fish called cichlids.
