Liwonde National Park harbours an abundant wildlife population: large numbers of elephant, reedbuck, waterbuck and sable, with a dense population of hippo in the river.Buffalo, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, zebra, roan, eland and rare black rhino have been introduced into the 4 000ha fenced Sanctuary within Liwonde.
Lake Malawi, Africa's third largest lake, has a wide range of underwater habitats, resulting in the lake supporting over 2 000 species of freshwater fish – a greater variety than any other lake on Earth, more than all of Europe and North America combined. The majority of these are colourful fish called cichlids.
Birdlife across this Exploration is prolific.
