On an 8-day management camp at the dedicated training facility in the Vumbura Concession recently, some of the other camp managers from all across our Botswana operation and I were introduced to the nuances of guiding guests in the Okavango Delta. The main aim was to get to know what a guide's day consists of and we had to do a bit of guiding ourselves. We went out on a couple of game drives and we really had a great time with the guide trainers, Chantelle, Brian and Moa. They are excellent educators and we learnt a lot from them.
The game drives were incredible, and we had some good birding as well as some special sightings of sable, leopard and cub, lion with cubs and many more.
For the leopard sighting we responded to another game drive vehicle that had found a well-known female leopard and her cub on an impala kill. As we got there the hyaenas had already stolen the kill from the leopard and the cub was up a tree escaping these wily scavengers. The mother then started calling and the cub came down the tree and we followed them for about 30 minutes. As we were driving back to camp we saw a Martial Eagle catch a baby Egyptian Goose from the edge of a small waterhole, fly to another, and then start feeding. These sightings were really spectacular!
Besides the big game we really had great time birding and we identified 158 bird species on the eight days that we were there, with some excellent waterbirds in abundance at Vumbura Paradise. Here we had Carmine Bee-eaters flying alongside the vehicle feeding on flushed insects. Another amazing sighting here was that while we were watching a sable bull drinking, a Shikra caught a Barn Swallow in midair. Another kill for the day at Vumbura!
