Kulala Wilderness Camp
07 Jun 2010
WEATHER
On the second of May, the camp was greeted with what might be described as Cape Town winter weather - cold and rainy. Alas the moisture is a bit late in the season to make much of difference to the parched vegetation of the reserve. It did however provide our manager, Enrico, with the opportunity to take some of his guests on a walk to the "pans" in front of camp - only two cm deep but really impressive for this area in May!
ANIMALS
In general, the Kulala Wilderness Reserve has had a very poor rainy season. A paltry 8mm was recorded. The grass that remains is mostly left over from last year's rainy season. The only real greenery to be found lines the Tsauchab River bed. Animals are thus concentrating more and more along this ribbon.
Some interesting raptors are regularly seen around the camp. This photo of a Black-breasted Snake-eagle was taken two kilometres from the camp.
CAMP NEWS
The reserve was without radio contact for a day and Johan had to climb a very rocky and steep outcrop to see what was wrong with the repeater, the climb was well worthwhile in the end because the quiver trees right at the top of the mountain were in full bloom.
