Jacana - February 2008

13 Feb 2008

As the January rains filled the Delta and the water levels rose, life here just got more interesting. A lot of  Tilapia fish are present at the moment, viewable in the water from the main area and room decks.

Boat trips have just started again this month at Jacana - it is very early in the year that we had to change from the vehicles to boats. The boats and water activities bring added excitement and a true feeling of being in the Delta as you cannot get any closer to wildlife than this. There were both large and little crocodiles spotted in and around the boats and a particularly friendly baby crocodile at the edge of the camp boat jetty.

The mokoro rides are always winners and they included the occasional splendid sighting of Pel's Fishing- Owl and that rare water-antelope - the sitatunga. There were a number of sitatunga sightings - both male and female - and one leaping around in the act of demarcating his territory. The hippo were a treat in the early morning breakfast session where we would see these giants sloshing through the shallow waters en route to the tranquillity of the deep cool waters. Nothing beats spending the afternoon doing a little catch-and-release fishing; battling to reel in a feisty tiger fish is one thing that really keeps you on your toes.

We had very few baboons on the island during the course of the month and they eventually returned towards the end of the month as the water started receding. They arrived back with a lot of energy, good manners and they were well missed as the island feels empty without them. Another great return was that of the elephants as we had two residing in Jacana Camp for the last few days of the month. They seemed pleased to be back.
