Chitabe Camp and Chitabe Lediba - March 2012
March has been a splendid month, as we edge further into winter there are so many changes in the environment. The weather has clearly changed as the mornings are very cool as are the nights. The rain clouds have disappeared into the clear blue sky and the small pans have started to dry up a little. The tall stands of grass have also started to dry out as they prepare for the cold months by sending all of their nutrients to their root stocks. This has made game viewing easier as the bush thins out a fair deal. The departure of the summer migrant bird species also indicates that winter is on the approach.
As mentioned above, the game viewing has been fantastic, as we have been graced by large numbers of giraffe, zebra, kudu, tsessebe, warthog, red lechwe and of course large herds of our impala.
With the abundance of herbivore species, comes an abundance of predatory species - this has certainly been true for this month. We have had a number of leopard, hyaena and lion sightings, as well as the more elusive ones such as bat-eared fox and honey badger.
The predatory highlight for the month was the sighting of a successful lion hunt - the Chitabe Pride took down a wildebeest just after sunset. The hunt and kill happened very quickly, which made for an action-packed sighting.

"From the second we arrived we felt special. Tiny welcomed us not only to the camp but into her heart. My father is recovering from cancer and had discussed it with her. She went out of her way to set up a special dinner for us (it was her idea). It was probably the highlight of our whole trip. EBS was so kind, professional and funny. What a great guide! We saw so many wonderful things. Lux went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed - he was always checking in on us - it was great! The boma dinner with traditional food and eating with our hands was a great idea - Thank you so much."
Phinley is fabulous! The entire staff are so friendly and always go out of their way to pamper the guests and make them feel at home! We especially appreciate Trevor and Alex fixing a meal for my son who missed it due to not feeling well Thank you for making this an amazing adventure!
