March 2017 – Tour de Wilderness is delighted to announce that the Nedbank Tour de Tuli has been shortlisted for the Discovery Sport Industry Awards 2017, as one of six finalists in the “Sport Participation Event of the Year” category.
The Nedbank Tour de Tuli is a multi-stage mountain bike event that takes participants into prime wilderness areas.
“We are honoured to be shortlisted in this final stage of the Discovery Sports Awards programme. The Nedbank Tour de Tuli is a unique event in that it provides cyclists with the opportunity to completely escape from the pressures of city life and instead spend five days exploring the pristine natural landscape of three African countries with nothing but their mountain bikes and passports. We pride ourselves on delivering an event that continues to surpass participants’ expectations in terms of experience and hospitality, all for the extremely worthy cause of raising funds for Children in the Wilderness,” says Tour Director, Nicola Harris.
The Nedbank Tour de Tuli is southern Africa’s premier mountain bike event, taking a maximum of 350 cyclists across 300 km of challenging and remote wilderness terrain in Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. All funds raised by the Tour are channelled directly into Children in the Wilderness (CITW), a non-profit organisation that runs sustainable environmental education programmes to bridge the divide between communities and the wildlife areas they live next to. This year saw the 12th edition of the Tour, and a record-breaking total of R3.5 million raised for CITW.
Rewarding the greatest achievements in the business of sport, the Discovery Sports Industry Awards programme is organised by the Sport Industry Group SA and recognises outstanding and innovative work in various categories. The final shortlist was selected by leading industry figures during an intensive two-day analysis and judging process, overseen by Deloitte. The winners will be announced at a ceremony attended by sportspeople and celebrities at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on 18 May 2017.
Sgwili Gumede, chairman of Sport Industry Group SA, said: “The quality and variety of this year's entries was astounding. We will have to wait until 18 May to discover who has produced the best success stories and who has set new standards of best practice in one of the fastest moving business sectors in the world.”
