November 2015 – Rocktail Camp, situated in northern KwaZulu-Natal’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park, has launched an exciting new children’s programme with a range of specially-designed activities to make the most of its incredible surroundings in the Maputaland Coastal Forest and Marine Reserve.
As one of South Africa’s most sought-after family beach holiday destinations, Rocktail is well equipped to host children of all ages. Home to some of the most pristine beaches along the coastline, Rocktail offers a range of water activities (snorkelling and scuba diving), as well as nature experiences, seasonal turtle nesting and adventure activities such as quad biking and sand boarding for older children. Its new children’s menu also includes interactive activities like baking with the chef, beach games and creative art.
“We are delighted to host young and enquiring minds at our camp and to introduce them to ocean conservation in a fun way, especially during our turtle season from October to March; seeing this phenomenon is an extraordinary opportunity for children to learn the importance of the conservation work being done here. Our guides, some of whom have worked on turtle monitoring projects for over two decades, delight in sparking an interest for our future conservationists,” says Patrick Boddam-Whetham, Rocktail MD.
Rocktail Camp has 17 en-suite rooms, seven of which are family units; each with two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. The Camp has an interactive children’s playroom with educational toys, board games and movies. The kitchen prepares a special child-friendly menu, and the team gets children involved in making their own pizzas and cookies. The Camp is able to provide cots, linen and baby baths on request, and offers child-minding services at an additional, yet minimal, cost.
Boasting some of the best coral reefs in the world, Rocktail is also a great destination to introduce children as young as eight years old to the Bubblemaker PADI course. This is available with Mokarran Dive Charters, Rocktail’s dive partners, located within walking distance of the camp. Mokarran’s Ocean Experience is also a fun way for children to experience an “ocean safari”, with the possibility of seeing dolphins year round, as well as other seasonal sightings including whale shark and humpback whale viewing.
“Rocktail is a great year-round family destination and our staff love to entertain children of all ages through stories and social activities. All our teams are well trained to tailor-make each family’s stay according to their individual needs and to do everything they can to exceed the expectations of both the parents and children, ensuring that the whole family has an exceptional beach holiday, added Boddam-Whetham.
