Segera Announces New Artist in Residence

May 25, 2017 | Wilderness Safaris

May 2017 – As part of its ongoing Artist in Residence Programme, Segera is looking forward to hosting the acclaimed conceptual artist, Hank Willis Thomas, to its retreat in Laikipia, Kenya from 20 June to 5 July 2017.

Hank Willis Thomas works with themes related to identity, history and popular culture and has exhibited his work at numerous international galleries, such as the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Guggenheim and the Whitney, among others. While at Segera, Hank is looking forward to personally interacting with guests, exploring the Retreat’s exceptional landscape and wildlife, and creating new artworks inspired by his time in this Kenyan wilderness.

"Segera's Artist in Residence programme is one of the ways we join the dots between Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary African Art) in Cape Town and Segera Retreat, its East African satellite; it's an amazing opportunity to connect with some of the world's leading artists while they soak up inspiration from our beautiful wild surroundings, and we’re looking forward to welcoming Hank Willis Thomas to Segera next month", commented Jens Kozany, General Manager of Segera Retreat.

Visiting Segera while an artist is in residence allows guests to directly engage with talented African artists through studio visits, talks and other social activities. Guests can learn first-hand about an artist’s work, their inspiration, process and the issues they are currently engaging with. It is a rare chance to spend time with the individuals who are creating some of the most significant art of our time.

As the East Africa hub of the Zeitz MOCAA, Segera displays striking, relevant and at times culturally and socially challenging artworks from the Zeitz Collection throughout the Retreat. It strives to strengthen intercultural relationships and understanding, safeguarding cultural heritage while raising awareness of cultural diversity. Segera is a destination for fun, adventure, spiritual reflection and peace, pioneering and embracing the holistic 4Cs approach to sustainability (a balance of Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce).

Centrally positioned in the heart of Laikipia, Segera is one of Africa’s most exciting safari destinations, boasting the second highest density of wildlife in Kenya including elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, reticulated giraffe, Lelwel hartebeest and providing a refuge for endangered species such as Grevy’s zebra, patas monkey and African wild dog.
