June 2017 – As a company deeply committed to pioneering authentic and sustainable ecotourism in Africa, Wilderness Safaris is proud to have been nominated for a 2017 Virtuoso Sustainable Tourism Leadership Award in the Preferred Partner category.

“We truly value the support we receive from our partners within the Virtuoso travel network and are honoured to have received this prestigious nomination and recognition for our commitment to our 4Cs sustainability ethos of Commerce, Community, Culture and Conservation”, said Craig Glatthaar, Wilderness Safaris Business Unit Manager. “Virtuoso’s belief that travel and tourism can play a valuable role in the protection of cultural and natural heritage for future generations is closely aligned to our core reason for being and vision – to conserve and restore Africa’s wilderness and wildlife by creating life-changing journeys and inspiring positive action”.

In FY2016, Wilderness Safaris spent BWP14.9 million directly on biodiversity conservation and participated in 67 active research and conservation projects across seven countries in partnership with the Wilderness Wildlife Trust. Together with Children in the Wilderness (CITW), 2 554 children were supported in Eco-Clubs and 536 children were hosted on 26 annual CITW camps. The company also continued to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, further investing in solar energy with 11 Wilderness Safaris camps now operating 100% on solar power, producing 3 060 kW/h (kilowatt per hour) per day of usable energy.

“In addition to helping protect more than 2.5 million hectares across eight biomes in Africa, which harbour 33 IUCN Red List mammal, bird and reptile species, we are proud to be launching our ecotourism model into Rwanda this month and to contribute to the conservation of the rainforest ecosystems and iconic Endangered species like the mountain gorilla. We are constantly looking for ways to build further sustainable conservation economies in Africa, and could not do this without the support of our partners – thank you for this exciting nomination and we look forward to seeing you all soon at Virtuoso Travel Week”, added Glatthaar.

Now in its seventh year, the Virtuoso Sustainable Tourism Leadership Awards recognise both a Hotel and a Preferred Partner that demonstrate outstanding leadership and commitment to sustainable tourism principles and practices. The winners will be announced at the Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas in August 2017. To see the full list of finalists, click here.
