Wendy Ngcobo, Communications Copywriter at Wilderness Safaris, shares her impressions of a day spent with her children at our Children in the Wilderness Eco-Club hosted in Johannesburg.

My children recently took part in a fun-filled and informative Eco-Club run by Children in the Wilderness (CITW) at the Wilderness Safaris office in Rivonia.

The bother and sisters trio, Hloni, Amogelang and Maleshoane were among the 20 children that attended the Eco-Club. The focus of the day was on the importance of saving water in light of World Water Day on 22 March. The day involved lots of fun activities: facts and games as well as practical exercises that included trying out a DYI hand sanitiser.

All three listened with eager attention and were very enthusiastic about the activities that they took part in.

“I really like being here to learn about the importance of saving water. When I brush my teeth I will make sure I don’t leave the water running,” confirmed Hloni.

While the children were learning about the water cycle and colouring in the booklet they were given, younger sister Maleshoane, aged three, was fascinated by the bicycle display at the entrance.

After watching the Suzelle DIY video on “How to be a Day Zero hero”, all three insisted that they wanted to make their own water-saving tools to use at home!

The CITW team in Johannesburg hosts these Eco-Clubs on a quarterly basis. This is a wonderful opportunity to create awareness about important environmental issues such as saving water and our role in being eco-conscious citizens. Interesting facts about rivers and waterfalls in South Africa were also on display for the children to read and learn more from.

The highlight of the day was climbing the Wilderness Safaris climbing wall. The Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA Johannesburg) were with us and helped the children with climbing and safety rules, and made sure everyone had a marvellous time.

Maleshoane, the youngest in the group, embodies the proverb, “dynamite comes in small packages”! Watching her siblings on the climbing wall was too much to resist and she insisted that she wanted to climb. The professional crew from MCSA helped make this possible and she loved the experience!

Thank you CITW, Wilderness Safaris and MCSA for a wonderful, informative and fun day for my children.
