Thirteen year-old Justin reports back on an incredible beach holiday at Rocktail Camp in northern Kwazulu-Natal, close to the border with Mozambique…
During October my parents, my friend Tshepiso and I went on an amazing trip to Rocktail Camp. On arrival, we went to our rooms to unpack, then ran down to the beach.
After an awesome time in the sea, we headed back to camp for a nice warm shower and a delicious dinner. After dinner, we went back down to the beach to see the stars.
The next day, we got up really early to go snorkelling. We spotted three whales and followed them for a while. We then caught up with some dolphins and got ready to snorkel. We got out of the boat, and suddenly were swimming with dolphins! It was so amazing that I don’t think words can describe it!
After this mind-blowing experience, we had a fantastic breakfast on the beach. Later that day, we went on an exhilarating dune-boarding experience.
On day three, we went snorkelling at a place called Lala Nek. We saw many beautiful tropical fish, and an eel or two. I then chilled at the pool for most of the day, and went to the beach again for the rest of the afternoon.
On our last day, we went to Lake Sibaya hoping to see hippos and crocodiles, but didn’t even see any (unfortunately), though our guide taught us a lot about traditional medicine made from trees and plants.
That night, we went on a walk in the forest to look for scorpions (which glow under a UV light making them easier to spot), then went home and I got a good night’s sleep.
