Climate and Landscape
Busanga Bush Camp boasts an endless vista of the Busanga Plains – as far as the eye can see, magical sunrises and amazing star gazing provide a peaceful wilderness experience.
The sense of seclusion and remoteness offered from the hot air balloon crystallises the essence of this wonderful area and its amazing wildlife, while views from camp are filled with puku and lechwe in the floodplain grasses, an expanse interrupted only by isolated protrusions of fig trees.
The month of August was productive for sightings of lion, leopard and cheetah. Red lechwe, zebra, elephant, buffalo, roan antelope, waterbuck, bushbuck, puku, warthog, wildebeest, jackal, mongoose, porcupine, sable, kudu were seen regularly while water activities brought guests close to amazing hippo and crocodile views at Hippo Pools.
It was interesting to see Princess and Machine with their cubs back in the Plains. Machine (one of the Papyrus Pride lionesses) is one of the most experienced hunting lionesses of the Busanga Plains, and both have been in hiding since the beginning of the season (probably due to the appearance of two nomads who appear to have driven out the formerly dominant Musanza Boys who fathered their cubs).
Birds and Birding
Great sightings of lappet-faced, white-backed, hooded and white-headed vultures, as well as a variety of other bird species were noted in the Plains this month.
Sightings of the Month
The sighting of a Ross’s turaco was a thrilling experience for our guests as it is not commonly seen in southern Africa. Another most outstanding experience was seeing Machine killing a warthog.
Adventurous activities included game drives, boat cruise and hot air ballooning (which was launched this this month). Floating over the Plains gives our guests a truly ‘wow’ experience, and for many it is their first balloon flight. The sense of pristine wilderness and remoteness from the hot air balloon is outstanding.
The team created many eye-catching experiences, especially for sundowners, with beautiful bush bars where guests were able to view the area’s world-renowned birds, with lions lying in the grass in the distance.
The housekeepers maintain a level of professionalism that wows our guests so much one jokingly said the standard is better than theirs at home.
