Climate and Landscape
Winter has truly arrived here in the Linyanti. The leaves are changing colour and dropping to the ground, and the lush grass is all but gone. With the morning temperatures dropping to around 6° Celsius the Bush Babies and ponchos have come in very handy. But by the time we stop for morning tea, it’s off with all the layers, as the sun has warmed us up nicely!

Wildlife
With the change in the environment, the game has been outstanding and it is easier to see further into the undergrowth of the mopane forests. With the water drying up in the woodlands, we have seen a steady increase in elephant numbers both along the channel and also crossing the lagoon while guests were out on the DumaTau Barge enjoying a well-deserved lunch.

At this time of year we see the return of many of the migratory plains animals, and zebra and wildebeest have returned in good numbers to the floodplains. Buffalo have also arrived in good numbers, which always gets us excited.

And of course, along with the large numbers of buffalo and zebra, comes a good number of predators. Especially lion – and we have seen the return of the DumaTau Pride following a large herd of buffalo. And let’s not forget the Channel Pride with their five cubs, seen hunting zebra along the Savute Channel. Meanwhile the two Namibian Boys are holding their ground around the Kings Pool area.

But the highlight this month for us was the joy we brought to Collin, a 17-year-old with a passion for fishing. When he saw the water in front of camp, his eyes lit up and he could not wait to go out fishing. He immediately grabbed a few rods and off he went to try his luck from the floating deck. The next afternoon guide BK took him out onto the lagoon in the small boat in search of the elusive tigerfish. And he was not disappointed. The first afternoon he caught two, the second afternoon four, and the last morning another three! Thus making his visit to DumaTau one that he will never forget.

As we head into the second half of the year, we can’t wait to see what Mother Nature has in store for us up here in the Linyanti.

So from myself Johan, and the team of Anneri, Kemm, Gee, Dudu and Leshy, and guides Mocks, Godfrey, BK, Ban, Flame and Evans… until the next time!
