Climate and Landscape
With yet another month having passed, we are now well and truly into summer. The temperatures here at DumaTau rose steadily to an average high of 35° Celsius. The hottest day reached 39° C and there is no rain in sight yet. The clouds were starting to build up during the last week of September, so let’s all hope that the first rain of the season is not too far off.

Wildlife
With virtually no food or water in the dry mopane forest most of the animals congregated along the floodplains towards the Savute Channel and we saw big herds of elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, waterbuck and lechwe – to name but a few. And with game seen in such numbers, the predators are never too far behind.

The DumaTau Pride of lions is still being seen between the Savute Channel and our southern boundary, making sure their cubs are well looked after – and hopefully crossing back over the channel towards camp soon.

The Zib Pack of wild dogs has shown us once again just how formidable they are. They returned to the area after denning on a neighbouring concession and proudly showed off their newest additions to the pack: 12 pups to be exact. The pack now has 15 adults and 12 pups, 27 dogs in total – making it the largest pack in the area.

Camp News
September saw the launch of our brand-new Star Bed situated on the Savute Channel overlooking the Zibadianja Lagoon where guests are treated to a private evening with their guide who prepares their meals over a fire while they enjoy the sunset.

September also saw Botswana celebrate its 51st year of independence. Guests were treated to a traditional evening in the boma. The choir was out in full voice entertaining guests with local song and dance. And with a tailor-made buffet, guests had the opportunity to experience some traditional cuisine from our chefs. To end off the evening, a breeding herd of around 30 elephant decided to join the festivities around the boma, much to everyone’s excitement. A great night was had by all!

And with that, it’s not goodbye, but till we meet again…

From myself Johan, and the DumaTau team of Anneri, Gao, Mpho and Bamps, and guides Mocks, Godfrey, Evans, Rodgers and BK… till next time.
