RMB Namibia Ride for Rhinos in Damaraland

The 2018 RMB Namibia Ride for Rhinos mountain bike event gets into gear in less than a month’s time, with the vitally important aim of assisting Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT) in its colossal task to raise awareness for and protect the country’s Critically Endangered black rhino population.

SRT operates in a remote, rugged area of more than a million hectares – with few fences, no national park status and no controls over who goes in or out. For the past 30 years, SRT has patrolled the area and the rhino population has rebounded from a point of near extinction to a level that all Namibians are extremely proud of. Still, there is no time for complacency and SRT is intensifying its efforts in the face of the very real threat posed by organised crime.

Wilderness is delighted to contribute to the success of the event by providing accommodation, two back-up vehicles and manpower.

As an expert marksman and wildlife guide, our Namibia Guide Trainer, Johan Fourie, cycles with the participants while Private Journeys Guide, Gerhard Thirion, provides camp logistics support, including doing the cooking!

Damaraland Camp provides the last two nights’ accommodation, and anyone who has stayed with us at this extraordinary lodge will recognise the riders’ intense appreciation for its warm welcome and ice-cold drinks, not to mention luxurious rooms and geologically jaw-dropping setting.

The RMB Namibia Ride for Rhinos takes place between 13 and 17 June 2018 on the Palmwag Concession in Namibia’s Kunene Region. Happily the 2018 ride is sold out but you can follow the event on their Facebook page or Instagram feed.
