Luck by name, luck by nature as Explorations guide David Luck shares his special sighting of a martial eagle on its Egyptian goose kill…

Special sighting: martial eagle feeding at Mombo

On a recent Green Season Photo Safari to Mombo Camp we saw an adult martial eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) plucking a freshly killed Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca). I was careful not to disturb this incredible raptor and we managed to get to about 30 metres from it.

Initially it was in the sun so it dragged the goose to the shade of a nearby tree. With it being so relaxed we took some images and then observed it finally eating the goose.

I was fascinated with how meticulous the eagle was in plucking its prey. Great care was taken in removing just about every feather possible. We found a big pile of feathers nearby.
