Climate and Landscape
The month of February brought vibrant life to Xigera’s Paradise Island after unexpectedly heavy rains amounting to 200 mm fell during the month. The water level in the channel rose from 100 cm last month-end to 140 cm, making it easy for short boating excursions, which we were not able to do this time last year.
Sightings included small herds of elephant, many hippo, giraffe, buffalo, impala, red lechwe, wild dog and a leopard family of three.
We also saw an abundance of birds in our area, most notable of which is the pair of Pel’s fishing-owls in camp.
Xigera Camp was closed from mid-January until 23rd February for airstrip maintenance. Our first guests arrived on 23rd February 2017 and we treated them to short game drives, mokoro and boat outings all the way to Xigera Lagoon, though in some areas the water was still shallow.
