The best time to visit Rwanda with Wilderness Safaris

When is the best time to visit Rwanda?

Rwanda has a temperate tropical highland climate, and – thanks to its high elevation – lower temperatures than you would expect for an equatorial country. Kigali’s daily temperatures range from 12 °C to 27 °C, with very little variation throughout the year. The mountainous north-west, where Bisate is situated, is generally cooler than the lower-lying east.

Rwanda has two rainy seasons: the first is from around February to June and the second from September through December. These are separated by two dry seasons: June to September, during which there is often no rainfall at all, and a shorter dry period from December to February. Typically the west and North-west of Rwanda receives more rainfall annually than the South-east and east of the country.

It is important to remember that while wildlife viewing can never be guaranteed, there are some trends that can be seen when we combine our knowledge of seasons, habitats and water availability with animal distribution, their numbers, and thus where they can be found. The table below gives some insight into these trends. For more details, it is best to speak to your Journey Specialist or a seasoned Africa expert.

Rainy Season € March To May & October To November

North West Rwanda has two rainy periods; from about March to May and then again over October and November. Although around the Volcanoes National Park rain can fall at any time of the year (and often does), it is these two periods when rain can be expected and when it does, it falls in relatively heavy downpours, usually occurring in the afternoons. The landscapes are lush and green, and the air clear of the haze that can characterise the drier periods, making for ideal photographic conditions. Gorilla viewing is just as good now as at any other time of the year, but don’t forget to bring your wet-weather gear.

Dry Season € June To September & December To February

During the two seasonal dry periods in North West Rwanda day time temperatures can be warm and sunshine bright. While rainfall is not common it is possible at any time of the year, although far lighter in nature. The rainfall and the associated cloud cover can help to moderate temperatures.
