About Olebogile (Ollie) Porote

Olebogile (Ollie) Porote Image

Ollie, as he is affectionately known, is one of our most senior guides – his knowledge gives this away instantly on meeting him. In these parts the minding and herding of livestock, especially for someone who comes from a long line of subsistence farmers, is not a foreign concept to young children and as a boy Ollie always obliged willingly in order to spend more time in nature. And so his passion began…

As is customary in Botswana, after school Ollie completed his National Service in the Department of Customary Law before ”removing his shackles” and enrolling at the Botswana Wildlife Training Institute. Employed by Elephant Back Safaris for two years, Ollie made the move to Wilderness Safaris – then Okavango Wilderness Safaris – in 2003 and has not looked back. Based at DumaTau Camp to begin with, his desire to explore other areas saw his promotion to Explorations guide as well as become a private guide soon after.

Ollie’s professional nature is compounded by his generosity of spirit and sharing his knowledge with others. A gentle and cheerful nature makes sure he is always a hit with the young and old and makes him a great companion to ensure unforgettable memories. His hobbies include walking through the bush and tracking game, photography and fishing and let’s not forget his love for playing volleyball, although the latter may not be of any use when you’re in a mokoro somewhere in the middle on the Okavango Delta…
