Ona Basimane has long established himself as one of the finest guides in the company owing to passion, enthusiasm, professionalism, crazy sense of humour and urbane manners which endear him to guests and colleagues alike. Despite growing up with the Moremi Game Reserve, Lake Ngami and Makgadikgadi Pans in his backyard, his guests are often awed at how excited he becomes at sightings. His genuine passion for wildlife and guiding is rooted in a childhood filled with excursions to the game reserves he grew up around.
Ona is an impressive photographer and an aspiring wildlife photojournalist. His images and articles have regularly appeared in numerous travel magazines. His photography makes him a powerful ambassador for his country; indeed, he has become a “regular” speaker at Wild Shots Wildlife Photography Symposium and his heart-stopping images, often shared on the company’s social media platforms, repeatedly receive praise. What is more, his passion for photography has helped him acquire more knowledge on animal behaviour and predicting great photographic moments for guests on safari. His quest to discover, learn and photograph previously undocumented wildlife behaviour drives his passion to be out in the field every day.
For the past two years Ona has been leading privately guided trips and specialist photography tours for Wilderness Safaris. Now part of the Guide Training Department, Ona trains and mentors other guides while his passion and knowledge of African wildlife as well as his eye and anticipation for a great pictures still ensure he is one of the most sought-after guides in Botswana. And at this rate, he is likely to be remembered alongside legendary guiding inspirations such as Benson Siyawareva, Map Ives and Mike Myers.
